THEME: Being Salt and Light – Friends living the kingdom of God in a broken world.

Our 2012 NYM Session theme is identical to that of the 2012 World Conference of Friends being held in Kenya, April 17-25. At this historic gathering, over a thousand Friends from all over the world, and from all branches of Quakerism, will come together to share a vision of peace and healing for the future.

NYM is sending four official representatives to this FWCC-sponsored gathering, and several other NYM Friends will be attending as well. We will hear from some of them during Saturday evening’s plenary. We will open ourselves to some of the same issues that Friends everywhere will be contemplating as they all hear from their returning delegates.

We often speak of the Light. Friends are less familiar with the Biblical metaphor of “being salt.” But we do speak of the need to “season” the issues we are considering. What would it mean for us to be both the “seasoning” and the source of illumination?

“As every corner of the globe faces economic, political and environmental turmoil, we ask ourselves how our small and diverse community can live its faith so that God’s love and purpose for the Earth…can be made known to the whole world”. (From www.saltandlight2012.org)
